Research & evaluation

Heading a partnership with the Women’s Aid Organisation, a Malaysian NGO, RIGHTS ON has been providing comprehensive technical support including assessment, workshops, practical tools, and training for the strengthening of a child rights approach in the institution’s work.

RIGHTS ON has been developing a publication series to provide hands-on guidance for national human rights institutions on children’s rights focusing on specific aspects of their mandate and presented them in webinars, with the first issues already being used at country level.

RIGHTS ON contributed 3 modules to an online course that primarily targets pediatricians.

RIGHTS ON produced an assessment and recommendations for independent child rights monitoring in Ukraine, which paved the way for discussions with national counterparts in a difficult political context.

At a conference to review the 2016 child protection law in France, RIGHTS ON presented a comparative perspective on child protection systems in  Germany, Italy and the UK, which was published in the proceedings of the conference.

RIGHTS ON, together with a national consultant, produced a feasibility study for an independent child rights monitoring mechanism in Vietnam through consultations with stakeholders at national and local level including children, and contributed advocacy with the parliament and in the media, leading to the inclusion of a monitoring component in the 2016 Law on children.

RIGHTS ON, together with another consultant, developed an analysis of the implementation of the Recommendation on child- and family-friendly social services, to inform the 2016-2021 Council of Europe Strategy to build a Europe for and with children.

As part of an EU funded multi-country research on access to justice for children with mental disabilities, RIGHTS ON conducted a review of international and European standards, which findings were integrated into the project’s final product.

RIGHTS ON performed an evaluation of two projects implemented at the local level in line with the OECD-DAC recognized international guidelines, which was published and shared with the international donors.

RIGHTS ON produced an in-depth analysis of legal minimum ages in various fields in all Latin America and the Caribbean countries, examining how they intersect and identifying gaps in legislation to strike a balance between autonomy and protection, and inform advocacy for law reform.

RIGHTS ON consolidated the State periodic report in line with the guidelines, which was then submitted to the Committee.

RIGHTS ON supported UNICEF Innocenti’s ongoing research on governance for children’s rights through planning and finalisation of publications and presented the research on independent institutions in various fora.

RIGHTS ON acted as substantive reviewer for indicators on the child-friendliness of governments in South Asia.

RIGHTS ON produced the analytical report of the ministerial conference of an EU-funded project on justice for children, showcasing the outcomes of the project for children.

POLICY ADVOCACY

RIGHTS ON has been advising the UAE and the government of Sharjah for child-friendly services by developing action plans in consultation with stakeholders, assessing progress and conducting training, leading to a stronger policy framework country-wide and the recognition of Sharjah as Child-Friendly City.

RIGHTS ON has been supporting UNICEF Child-Friendly City Initiative by developing a toolkit, indicators’ framework and child participation guidance, contributing to a refined consolidated framework and visibility of the initiative within and outside the organisation.

RIGHTS ON produced an assessment and recommendations for independent child rights monitoring in Ukraine, which paved the way for discussions with national counterparts in a difficult political context.

RIGHTS ON facilitated a workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria, to strengthen the capacities of independent institutions for children’s rights, leading to the further engagement of UNICEF regionally through a capacity-building project started at the end of that year.

RIGHTS ON, together with a national consultant, advised UNICEF and the Government of Morocco by developing a comprehensive plan detailing measurable steps for implementation of the child protection policy in consultation with national stakeholders and presented it to the Minister, contributing to its adoption.

RIGHTS ON, together with a national consultant, produced a feasibility study for an independent child rights monitoring mechanism in Vietnam through consultations with stakeholders at national and local level including children, and contributed advocacy with the parliament and in the media, leading to the inclusion of a monitoring component in the 2016 Law on children.

RIGHTS ON supported the government of Kosovo (SC 1244) by developing a regulation to ensure access to social services for children repatriated with their families from high income European countries and building local capacities to implement the regulation.

In support of UNICEF advocacy in the country in a context of transition, RIGHTS ON developed a policy document comparing a government coordinating mechanism and an independent institution, which informed further consultations with stakeholders and young people on the topic.

RIGHTS ON developed the explanatory part of the guidebook, which aimed to build the capacities of local officials on child rights and how to implement child rights approaches in local policies.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

CAPACITY BUILDING

RIGHTS ON ensures the pedagogical coordination of the first Massive Open Online Course on children’s rights in French.

[Webinar]

RIGHTS ON made the key presentation at the first webinar organized on the topic at UNICEF, paving the way for UNICEF’s further engagement on this issue globally.

RIGHTS ON moderated a panel and made a presentation on independent institutions in plenary.

WHO WE ARE

RIGHTS ON was created in 2013. A Paris-based consultancy company, we work with clients and partners around the world.

Vanessa Sedletzki

Vanessa Sedletzki is the founder of RIGHTS ON.

An expert with 20 years of experience in human and child rights, she worked for more than a decade with UNICEF at its Headquarters in New York and at the Innocenti Office of Research in Florence, Italy.

Her involvement has spanned a wide range of child rights and child protection topics. She has focused in particular on the link between children’s daily experiences and policy approaches, through independent institutions, access to justice, and child-friendly services.

A multilingual professional fluent in English, French, Italian and Spanish, she interacts with a diverse array of audiences and has authored a number of publications.
